Should Once Upon a Time Add More Classic Disney Villains?
Once Upon a Time is centered around fairy tale characters with interesting twists, and throughout the show’s two seasons, we’ve seen many familiar faces. Though some are beloved, like princesses like Snow White, Cinderella, and Belle, the villains are equally recognizable, and we look forward to seeing them just as much.
However, the evil focus has solely been on Regina (The Evil Queen), her mother, Cora (The Queen of Hearts), and Rumplestiltskin. We saw the Blind Witch from Hansel and Gretel and Maleficent, but other than a few questionable characters (Sidney Glass, Prince James, and that weird Siren), OUAT has gypped us in the classic villain department!
This isn’t to say that some characters haven’t given us the heebie jeebies or that we don’t appreciate them getting creative with their creepy characters (see: evil shadow Peter Pan), but we’d love to get nostalgic. Seeing fairy tale characters in a new and innovative way is great, but what we wouldn’t give to see Cruella De Vil waltz in with a trail of dalmatians (Pongo’s pals), or watch Ursula wreak havoc on Ariel (when, not if, she appears) and perhaps even someone like Captain Hook. That would be an interesting twist!
Frankly, as much as we think good should prevail over evil, seeing a different side of the battle would be interesting. It would also take the heat from Regina, who has been the center of all things terrible for two seasons. Exploring new villains — whether from classic fairy tales or Disney films — like Jafar from Aladdin or Scar from The Lion King would be interesting, and we hope to see further exploration of them in Season 3.
