Here for all the gory details on the death of Robb Stark (Richard Madden), the latest beloved victim on Game of Thrones? If you must torture yourself, read on. Here’s how the magnificent King Robb bites the bullet, er, sword in Season 3, Episode 9: “The Rains of Castamere.” Spoiler: it ain’t pretty.
Robb’s demise comes at the event commonly referred to as the Red Wedding, i.e. the marriage ceremony and celebration for Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey. See, Robb offered Edmure as a replacement husband after he broke his marriage vow to one of Walder Frey’s daughters in favor of the foreign field medic, Talisa Maegyr. Walder is none too pleased with Robb’s switcheroo and plots his revenge.
At the wedding celebration in the book (and probably the show, given the episode’s title), the wedding band starts playing the Lannister fight song, “The Rains of Castamere,” and the slaughter begins. Robb is immediately shot with multiple arrows as his mother, Catelyn Stark, looks horrifyingly on at the slaughter before her. Cat takes the closest Frey hostage in a desperate attempt to save her wounded son’s life, but Walder has relatives to spare and couldn’t care less.
Torturer-extraordinaire Roose Bolton delivers an uncharacteristically quick death to Robb, stabbing him through the heart (R.I.P., Robb), but the bloodshed doesn’t end there. Cat kills her Frey hostage, and is killed herself. The kicker? They take out Grey Wind, Robb’s direwolf, too. Apparently, the Freys are into arts and crafts because they sew Grey Wind’s head to Robb’s body. No points for class.
