American Idol Winner Candice Glover Hurt By Comments About Her Weight
While her time on American Idol 2013 is now behind her, some of the critiques winner Candice Glover got during her impressive run still sting a bit. In a recent interview, the South Carolina native admits she didn’t really understand why they didn’t think she was marketable.
"It kind of hurt my feelings when I would hear them say like, 'Oh my gosh. You're so current. I could hear you on the radio today' and then they'd tell me my vocals are cool, but what does marketable mean? What do I need to do? Do I need to lose weight? Should I wear my hair a different way?” Candice wondered.
The powerhouse vocalist said Nicki Minaj’s comments only reinforced this, especially her comment, “I can now see Candice, a current R&B singer, right now. I don't know if you lost weight, but baby girl you look good.” As Candice put it, “I was confused, but I don't know. It was weird."
There was also the fact that the judges gave her inconsistent feedback, initially criticizing her for being too “churchy” but then later commending her on her church-like vocals and impressive runs.
For any of us who have been watching American Idol for a while, that kind of inconsistency in critiques has been a common complaint among the contestants. The judges will say something like “We need to know who you are as an artist” but then criticize them for getting too boring. Or they'll tell them to make the songs their own but then complain about them changing up the melody.
We definitely understand where Candice is coming from but we have to wonder whether the judges were on to something about marketability. Candice had the worst first week of sales for her coronation single of any of the past Idol winners. Perhaps it's just the waning interest in the show, but perhaps not.
What do you think? was Candice unfairly criticized during her time on the show?
