The Vampire Diaries at ATX Television Festival: Which Deaths Hit Julie Plec the Hardest?

The Vampire Diaries creator/producer Julie Plec has participated in a lot of hard decisions about the fate of various cast members and their characters over the years. None have been more traumatic for Julie, however, than the decision to kill off Vicki Donovan (Kayla Ewell), Jenna Sommers (Sara Canning) and Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis).

Wetpaint was on hand at the ATX Television Festival in Austin on Sunday for an amazing Vampire Diaries Q&A session with producer Julie Plec and actress Arielle Kebbel (Lexi Branson). During the panel at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, Julie was asked which death/s on The Vampire Diaries hit her the hardest. She said there were “three for different reasons” that were really difficult — Vicki, Jenna and Alaric.

“Kayla, who played Vicki, was the first regular we killed on the show,” Julie said, “and that was really, really difficult for personal reasons because she, as an actress, is such a special person. Julie added that Kayla “was kind of a team leader on the set — everyone loved her, and she was devastated.” No one really saw her death coming, according to Julie, and it was very sad for everyone to lose their buddy.

The decision to kill off Jenna Sommers, Elena’s aunt, was also a tough experience for Julie Plec as well. “Telling Sara Canning that Jenna was going to meet her demise... I basically had her in my office, I flew to Atlanta to tell her,” Julie said. The Vampire Diaries producer said she started crying and explaining about the death, which made Sarah start weeping as well. Then she got mad! “Two years I’ve been waiting for a good storyline, and you’re killing me?”

“It was brutal,” Julie remembered, thought she did promise Sarah her death would be “epic” — and it was!

The last death that was a huge blow for Julie was the plot twist of killing off Alaric. “As a fan, Matt Davis is a very special friend of mine, and Alaric was my favorite,” Julie said. “I loved Alaric and I still love Alaric. He’s Captain freakin’ America! It felt like a very, very powerful loss, both for the show and knowing that Damon wouldn’t have his buddy and Elena and Jeremy wouldn’t have their guardian.”
