Broadway fans, listen up: Because the news we’re about to drop is gonna be legen... wait for it... dary. Neil Patrick Harris is going back to Broadway.
The one-time Glee guest will be finishing up his the eighth and final season of his hit comedy, How I Met Your Mother, later in 2013. After that, Neil’s schedule will be open for the first time in years, and the former Broadway actor is wasting no time rushing back to the stage.
Starting in the spring of 2014, Neil will star as Hedwig, a fictional transgender rock star, in the musical Hedwig and the Angry Itch.
“I am simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to be stepping into Hedwig’s heels,” he tells Entertainment Weekly. “It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime role and I can’t wait to begin the journey.”
The musical’s writer, composer, and crew couldn’t seem more excited to have him on board, either. “It’s like you’re putting together a fantasy rock band and Paul McCartney agrees to play bass,” composer Stephen Trask gushed.
Neil appeared in Broadway’s Sweeney Todd back in 2001 and in a number of other shows up through 2004. He’s also directed several non-NYC musical productions and hosted the Tony Awards four times. Our personal favorite NPH musical moment, however, is the actor’s starring role as a geeky, lovable supervillain set on world destruction — in Joss Whedon’s cult hit Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.
Congrats to Neil on his big Broadway return!
