Pretty Little Liars Recap: Season 4, Episode 2: “Turn of the Shoe”
The bird is the word! On this week’s Pretty Little LiarsSeason 4 episode (Season 4, Episode 2: "Turn of the Shoe"), Aria has a new teacher to get in trouble with, Emily is in over her head, and Hanna’s mom proves that heels really are suitable for any activity.
Wherein Spencer Knows Why the Caged Bird Sings
It’s a little ridiculous, but we’re actually liking this whole bird subplot, as it adds a new way of learning more about Ali. (Plus, we’re suckers for animals that act like people.) So who was Ali calling on the phone? By the way, between the dead pig this week and then the bird this week, we’re thinking “A” just might be an aspiring chef.
Also, we were probably more crushed than Spencer herself was about her not getting into Penn. (How could this possibly happen?! Spencer’s the smartest person ever!) However, we can’t help but wonder if CeCe had something to do with this, given that she handed in Spencer’s application. Not cool, CeCe.
Wherein Aria Finds Herself a Karate Kid
Aria certainly seems to gotten over Ezra in a hurry, as she plants a smooch on hunky martial arts instructor Jake. We’re loving Jake so far, but our issue with this couple is that they don’t have a great mash-up name. (Isn’t “Jaria” already for Aria-Jason?) We also love how this episode reminded us of just how useless that whole Holden subplot was last season. (Answer: So useless.)
Wherein Emily Has to Shoulder a Serious Burden
We didn’t exactly love Emily’s storyline this week, given that her taking painkillers for an injury is familiar, not to mention that her getting almost hit with Mona’s car by “A” marked the 3,278th time someone has been run down by a car this show. (We’re pretty sure that number is accurate.)
But Emily’s storyline was definitely emotional, with Paige and Emily continue to get cuter by the minute. So does her accident mean Emily won’t be going to Stanford? And who exactly was behind the wheel of that car?
Wherein Hanna’s Mom Thought Wilden Was a Total Heel
What the heck is going on with Hanna’s mom? We can’t imagine she really killed Wilden — although we can’t blame her for wanting to — but then why are her shoes muddy, which seem to match the footprints found near Wilden’s body?
And why did Hanna's mom lie about her phone going missing? We miss the old Ashley Marin, who used to be our favorite mom on the show! Plus, we don’t know how many storylines involving muddy shoes this show really needs. (Lucas from Season 1, anyone?
— Who broke into Mona’s car, tried to strangle her, and then almost ran over the Liars? (By the way, that actually describes a rather uneventful day for the Liars.) And does this mean that we can now trust Mona? Because we’re super suspicious of what she was saying to those cops.
— Which phone number did Tippi the bird memorize — and is it in fact Board Shorts’ number, as the Liars suspect? If we had to guess, we would think the Beach Hottie might be Wren, Noel, or Ezra — but that’s also because we’d like to see those guys in nothing but board shorts on a future episode.
— Did Spencer really get rejected from Penn, or is this “A”-related? After all, we’re still wondering about CeCe having offered to pass along her college application to a friend last season. Come to think of it, we don’t even get why CeCe has any friends.
— The flashback to Ali and her mom was revealing, especially because it suggests Ali was a pro at holding her breath. Looks like she was probably the one reaching out of the ground after all! So was it her twin whose body was found?
— Emily has been drugged once before, so we wouldn’t be surprised if someone — perhaps Shana? — somehow tampered with her meds. Was Shana also the one driving the car, since she would want Emily to get hurt? And after Emily has been almost drowned by Paige and now passed out in the water, we wouldn’t blame her for never wanting to come near a pool again.
— Now that we know Toby’s mom was in good spirits just before her death, we continue to wonder if Ali did something to Toby’s mom — or perhaps it was Jenna? Frankly, given all the creepy stuff that happens at Radley, we’re surprised that the city hasn’t shut that place down already.
Other Things to Be Discussed:
— Only Aria could think it’s a good idea to wear that lipstick-print top along with that kooky vest.
— Tippi seems like a pretty silly name for a bird, until you realize that Tippi Hedren was the real-life star of the Alfred Hitchcock film The Birds. Nicely done, PLL.
— We know it’s wrong and bad and wrong to suggest this, but we weren’t the only ones sensing some chemistry between Ezra and Spencer, were we? Please say we weren't! Team Spezra unite!
