Last month, Angelina Jolie revealed that she underwent a double mastectomy as a preventative measure against breast cancer, and many applauded her bravery. However, singer Melissa Etheridge, who is a breast cancer survivor, disagreed, calling it “fearful,” noting she should have just monitored her stress levels and nutrition instead.
Now there’s another big disagreement coming from Dancing With the Stars co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet, who recently survived thyroid cancer and is firmly on Angelina’s side. Brooke thinks Melissa’s comments are “really inappropriate.”
“I feel like to comment on somebody else's decision and their motivation and to criticize it in any way feels really inappropriate for me,” she said during her E! Entertainment Special, airing tonight.
“I bite my tongue because Angelina is not a personal friend and I can't speak about her experience, but doing something electively to avoid greats odds that you can have a fatal disease, not only is it brave, but I think it's pretty intelligent,” she continued.
Brooke also revealed that doctors gave her the option of removing half her thyroid, but having the full thyroidectomy felt like the safest choice to her. “I’m fighting to stay alive for my family — at all costs,” she concluded.
Are you on Melissa’s side or Brooke’s? Sound off in the comments below.
