How to Fix 5 Pesky Beauty Problems, From Smudged Nails to Clogged Brushes
It seems that no matter how hard we try, our beauty regimen is always booby-trapped — our perfect shade of lipstick gets discontinued, our gloss develops a disgusting white film, and our freshly painted nails always smudge. What’s a girl to do? Thankfully, InStyle got the scoop on several beauty tricks that we could all try to save us money and headaches. Let us know how they work!
1. Smudged Polish It’s really the worst when we just finish the most perfect coat of polish ever, then we go to get up and bang a digit on the counter, leaving a big ol’ smudge. Of course it’s sometimes just easier to wipe the nail clean and start over, but what if you didn’t have to? Next time fate strikes, dab a small amount of non-acetone remover over the smudge with the pad of your finger to smooth out the edges, cover it with a light coat of polish, then follow up with a clear coat. If you’re like many of us who just don’t have the time to literally wait for paint to dry, try setting your freshly polished fingers into ice cold water for three minutes. The chilly bath will essentially freeze the polish and you’ll be ready to get on with your life much sooner.
2. Clogged Brushes Makeup brushes aren’t cheap — especially if you need to buy several a year after they get cakey with product — so makeup artist Fiona Stiles recommends washing your brushes once a month with dish detergent to break down the oils of the product, then laying them on a paper towel to dry. Don’t leave them standing in a cup, either, as this allows water to seep into the base and rot the bristles, says makeup artist Jake Bailey. 3. Gross White Lip Film This isn’t from your gloss as much as your lips, so Bailey suggests exfoliating with a washcloth first or using a cotton swab on the edges of your smile to gather the white gunk before applying product. Or to avoid all the hassle, maybe just switch to a tinted or glossy balm instead. 4. Discontinued Favorite All hope is not lost if your perfect shade of lipstick, blush, or eye shadow leaves the shelves.Three Custom Color is a company that custom-blends colors to recreate your perfect shade — all they need from you is a dime-size sample and they can bring your lipstick shade back to life, giving you two sticks for $60. 5. Fuzzy Forehead Those tiny hairs right on our hairline always break and fluff, making our perfect pony look slightly frayed. Apply the quick fix of a clean toothbrush misted with your favorite hairspray and gently brush those flyaways back into place. Clear mascara is yet another quick fix.
