They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but in the case of these unattractive pooches, some are real, well... dogs.
The world-famous Ugliest Dog Contest will take place this Friday, June 21, in Petaluma, California. The contest will be part of the Dog Lovers’ Festival. To commemorate the event’s 25th year, an official 160-page World’s Ugliest Dogs Anniversary book will be available for purchase.
This year’s winning dog and owner will receive a cash prize of $1,500, a trophy, a photo session with a well-known photographer, and VIP treatment — including a catered dinner for both dog and owner — at the Petaluma Sheraton.
According to Sonoma-Marin Fair spokeswoman Vicki DeArmon, “More than half the contestants are brand-new, and a lot of the time the winner is a new dog.” She says that 25 to 30 dogs are expected to compete this year, adding, “This year there are more pugs than ever.”
To make the event even more festive, one of this year’s judges is Jon Provost, who played “Timmy” in the long-running TV show Lassie.
The trophy was taken home last year by a Chinese crested dog named Mugly. In fact, according National Geographic, this breed has tied up the majority of these contest held in the past decade. This is probably due to the breed’s hairless nature and their tendency to develop skin problems.
For this year’s event, in unofficial online voting, the fan favorite appears to be Ellie Mae, an unfortunate looking 8-year-old Chinese crested. In second place is a homely Chinese crested-Japanese Chin mix named Squiggy.
What about you moms, which homely pooch do you think should go home with the gold?
