Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars Recap: Season 4, Episode 3: “Cat’s Cradle”

So many masks! In tonight’s Pretty Little Liars Season 4 episode (Season 4, Episode 3: "Cat's Cradle"), lots of moms are getting messed with, yet another gun has gone missing, and we’re thinking that Aria is the least-qualified person to offer romantic advice.

Wherein Hanna Realizes Her Mom Isn’t a Big Fan of Show Tunes

Caleb has returned, meaning all is right in the world again! Sure enough, Hanna’s cutie is back to his adorably concerned self, as he tracks down Hanna’s dad. Hanna’s dad informs us that his gun was missing after Hanna’s mom paid him a visit on the night of Wilden’s death. Uh, why is it that the Liars’ dads do such a poor job of hiding their secret firearms? (Or was Hanna's dad the one who killed Wilden?)

We also love that Hanna tracked down that Melissa mask at the Hector Lime’s House of Freaky Crap (we’re pretty sure that’s its real name). That said, how is it that the Liars are still trusting enough let some random weirdo cover up one of their faces with plaster of Paris? We’re starting to think these are the gullible little liars.

Wherein Aria Is About to Spend a Lot More Time With The Always-Creepy Byron

Okay, so we may have jumped the gun (get it — because there was a gun in the episode?) on liking Aria’s new beau Jake. There’s something that doesn’t feel right about this guy, between his bizarre sense of humor and the fact that he randomly showed up at Aria’s home last week. Throw this one back, Aria!

We’re not sure that Ella’s boyfriend Zack getting sent to Vienna has anything to do with “A” — somehow, we wouldn’t be surprised if “A” has pastry connections in Austria — but it is suspicious that so many moms were involved in the storyline this week. Either way, we'll miss you, Ella.

Wherein Spencer Just Can’t Stay Away From Radley

We still don’t know what we’re going to learn about Toby’s mom’s death, or if this story is just going to be another parent-related red herring, a la Caleb’s dad and the church bell last season. However, we’re happy for Toby, who finally gets some answers when he and Spencer realize his mom couldn’t have jumped out of her window onto the ground below.

And we know Melissa and Spencer have the worst sibling relationship ever, but things between them were tenser than ever. What did Melissa mean when she told Spencer to leave town — and was Melissa trying to tell Spencer in her bedroom that she recently chose to save Spencer’s life over someone whom Melissa cared about?

Wherein Emily Receives the Kind of Facial That You Can’t Get at a Day Spa

We don’t know how anyone could think someone as beautiful as Emily could possibly resemble Medusa — seriously, what was he thinking? — which is why we think Hector Lime may have suspicious reasons for making a mask of her face. And couldn’t the girls have swiped the Emily mask along with the Melissa one?

Emily’s parents haven’t gotten tough treatment from “A” up until this point, but they are now, with both of them getting contacted by Family Services. Could “A” be hoping to get Pam to lose her job at the police station? That said, as long as we get to see plenty of scenes of new hottie cop Officer Holbrook, we don’t care who else works there.

— Melissa was back with a bang this week, as she was stirring up mysteries across the board. Why was she meeting with the new police officer in the station — and what is up with that mask of her? And speaking of the police, does that white board with the Liars’ faces have something to do with Mona talking to the police last week?

—We really don’t know if we can trust Mona or not, which means her story about Melissa being on the train might be suspect. Is it possible that Mona only saw someone in a Melissa mask and just assumed it was the real Melissa? Or is Melissa getting questioned by the police because she really did have something to do with Wilden’s murder?

— What the heck is Hanna’s mom up to, as she was back at Rosewood instead of seeing the Broadway play? We’re concerned about the fact that Tom Marin’s gun has gone missing, although being surprised when someone in Rosewood steals your gun is like being surprised when the cheese sandwich that you placed next to your pet mouse has gone missing. (What we’re trying to say is, people in Rosewood like guns.)

— Now that we know Ali had a mask of her own face — which, by the way, means Ali is just as vain as we always thought she was — it appears that Ali (or her twin) might have been the Lady in Black at the funeral, since she was wearing an Ali mask.

— At the end of the episode, we see someone looking at Emily’s X-ray. We don’t know who has it, but our guess is this has something to do with Wren, since he certainly knows a thing or two about X-rays.

Other Things To Be Discussed:

— We may not have liked much of what Melissa did this week, but we did love the way she dressed, particularly the blue blazer with green trim she wore in Spencer’s room. Melissa can dress to kill — and can probably actually kill as well.

— Besides the fact that Jake is already starting to annoy us, we’ll also take Ezra’s vests over Jake’s boring plaid any day of the week. And can we also say how much we love Hanna’s “Meow” T-shirt which she wore in her room? Somehow, that’s just the most perfect Hanna shirt ever.
