The casting news most Game of Thrones fans have been waiting for finally broke yesterday: Oberyn Martell will be played by Pedro Pascal, a Chilean actor whose profile is about to get a major boost. But we want to know: Are you excited or disappointed by this casting?
Based on the reactions we've seen around the internet, almost no one was thinking of Pedro for the role, in part because he's just not very famous. However, Game of Thrones has a knack for selecting pitch-perfect relative unknowns for the show. Outside of Peter Dinklage and Sean Bean, none of the cast were huge names before the show, and many of the actors we've come to love were just as unknown as Pedro.
Because of the show's strong history of picking the right person for the part, we're really excited to see Pedro in action. After all, there must be a reason David Benioff and Dan Weiss described him as "a fellow who can handle the job description and make it seem effortless. He wasn’t easy to find and he won’t be easy to stop."
That said, a lot of fans had something a bit different in mind for the part. Some had a perfect actor they wanted to see; others were just hoping for someone with darker skin, to match the image of Oberyn they had from the books.
