It was a big loss to Teen Wolf when Colton Haynes (Jackson) left the show for CW-ier pastures. (He’s currently cast as Roy Harper on Arrow.) Still, in a new interview with Collider, creator Jeff Davis says he understands why the blue-eyed actor left.
“It was challenging, but we also did see it as an opportunity,” says Jeff. “We really benefit from bringing in new characters. I don’t begrudge Colton for wanting to move on and try something different. I think he was ready to do it, and we wished him all the best. It allowed us to bring in some new romance and some new fun and new faces.”
Some of those new faces were killed off pretty quickly — such as Stiles’s (Dylan O’Brien) childhood friend. Jeff explains the impetus behind the Darach storyline, saying, “I wanted to tell a detective story. And Stiles and Lydia [Holland Roden], especially, become the detectives of this season and of our group. I started referring to them as the David and Maddie of Teen Wolf.” (For those of you too young to know, David and Maddie were private detectives in the comedy-drama Moonlighting, which, sadly, is not available for streaming on Netflix.)
Part of Stiles’s transformation into detective is Jeff’s concerted effort to make the sidekick into something more. “I think he’s rising to the part of a leader,” he says.
As Stils grows up — Jeff points out that the teenager has put a lot of effort into being a better son, student, friend, etc. — he’ll continue to change. For Jeff, “It’s fun to see Stiles following in the footsteps of his father. It’s also fun to see him working side by side with Lydia, and to see the two of them becoming actual friends and partners-in-crime.”
Just as long as Lydia and Stiles avoid the “Moonlighting curse...”
