When Cory Monteith First Met Girlfriend Lea Michele: “I Was Nervous!”

Heartbreaking update: Cory died suddenly on July 13 of a heroin overdose. Our hearts go out to Lea during this extremely difficult time.

Lea Michele (Rachel) and her Glee co-star Cory Monteith (Finn) had been dating for a year and a half before his death, and Lea had recently said she couldn’t even remember a time when Cory wasn’t her boyfriend. But the truth is, they worked on the show together for over two years before anyone knew they were romantically involved.

The couple recently sat down together for an interview about Rachel’s solo version of “Don’t Stop Believin’,” which appeared in Glee Season 4, Episode 19: “Sweet Dreams.” With Lea sitting right there at his side, Cory was asked about his first impression when he first met his now-girlfriend.

“The first impression I had when I met Lea was, I was intimidated because...” Lea cocks her head to the side and gets a funny look on her face. “Honestly, I was,” he tells her. “I was intimidated because you are very talented.”

“I heard about this Lea Michele Sarfati, so I went on YouTube and looked at all these videos of you performing on stage, and when I met you, I was nervous. She just kind of had a different energy than everyone else there.”

“Aww, good answer,” Lea tells him. The two look just about as sweet and coupley as can be. He has his hand on her knee and she’s wrapped her arms around his.

In less ridiculously adorable news, Cory entered rehab for substance abuse not long after this interview was filmed. Lea has been firm in her support of her boyfriend’s decision, and reports are saying that the couple’s relationship remains “as strong as ever.” Our thoughts are with Cory as he embarks on this journey to recovery.
