Glee Confirms Cory Monteith Tribute Episode! When Will It Air? — UPDATE

UPDATE: Via TV Line, Fox president Kevin Reilly has confirmed that the Cory Monteith tribute will, in fact, be Season 5, Episode 3. Based off of Glee's September 26 premiere, that would mean Episode 3 will air on Thursday, October 10.

As fans grapple with the sudden and shocking death of Glee star Cory Monteith (Finn), one thing has become overwhelmingly clear: Fans want a Cory Monteith tribute episode. Now, show creator Ryan Murphy — who plucked Cory out of obscurity back in 2009 and turned him into a superstar — is opening up to about Cory’s passing, and he confirms to TV Line that Glee absolutely will be doing a tribute episode to the fallen star.

Ryan reveals that Glee’s Cory Monteith tribute episode will be happening at some point in Season 5. However, it will not be within the first two episodes, since scriptwriting was well underway when Cory died on July 13. (Of course, any Finn involvement in those episodes is now being written out.) Because of this, simply just from a production standpoint, Cory’s tribute just can’t be be the first episode.

“It’s impossible to start the season with the tribute episode; we have no time to prepare it,” Ryan explains of the decision to not lead off the season addressing this tragedy.

But the tribute is coming. “Right now we’re writing the third episode, which deals with Finn’s death — which, you can imagine, is a very difficult episode to write,” Ryan says. “[It] has to be done very carefully and with a lot of taste and really making sure that it’s a tribute to Cory. Then, who knows? Maybe we’ll wait to shoot that. We really have to see how everybody feels.”

So while the tribute is tentatively scheduled for Episode 3, it could be pushed back if it is just too painful for the Glee cast to address so soon. But rest assured, a Cory Monteith tribute is coming. And everyone in the Glee family is committed to doing it right.
