As soon as we heard that Glee star Cory Monteith (Finn) had died, we knew that the course of Glee would be changed forever. Never again would Finn Hudson walk the halls of McKinley Hall. Then our minds went immediately to Lea Michele (Rachel), Cory’s girlfriend and probably Glee’s most recognizable star. Struck with grief over losing Cory, would Lea even want to return to Glee?
After all, this is the show where she and Cory fell in love. Their relationship was so similar to Finn and Rachel’s in some ways. Obviously, returning to Glee would be beyond difficult for Lea. So is she leaving the show for good?
On July 20, Glee creator Ryan Murphy confirmed to that Lea is not leaving, and will absolutely return for Season 5.
“She wants to be with people. The [Glee] family is her family. She wants to be with the cast and the crew,” he says.
FOX announced on July 19 that Glee’s Season 5 premiere would only be pushed back one week, instead of the months-long hiatus originally speculated. And surprisingly, Ryan says that Lea was actually the driving force behind that decision.
“Ultimately, we made no decisions without consulting Lea. [Executive producer] Brad Falchuk and I talked to Lea and really asked her what she wanted to do. We laid out every possible option,” Ryan says.
“She was very adamant that she thought it was best for the cast and crew to get back together sooner [rather] than later so that mortgages could be paid and people could take care of their families. Cory was so beloved that she felt people really needed to be together in this time. So we sort of followed her lead.”
While we can’t imagine that life back on set will be easy for Lea, as Glee fans, we are at least glad to know that we have something to look forward to.
