Fans of both The Walking Dead and Legend of Korra can rejoice, as actor Steven Yeun (aka Glenn Rhee) will be loaning his voice to Season 2 of the hit Nickelodeon show!
Steven will take on the role of Wan, the first ever Avatar in existence in a special two-part story arc entitled “Beginning 1” and “Beginning 2.”
In case you’re unfamiliar with the show, Korra (like its predecessor, Avatar: The Last Airbender) is an animated series involving “benders” — people endowed with the ability to manipulate one of the four elements (earth, air, fire, water). The “Avatar” is the only person who can manipulate all four and is tasked with the job of keeping peace and order in the world.
Wan’s story will take place 10,000 years before Korra and follow the skilled teen as he uses his abilities to bring peace between the spirits and mankind for the first time ever.
For Korra fans, Steven’s character is a quite a big deal. In both Korra and Avatar, viewers have seen various reincarnations of the Avatar (who is born with the memories of the Avatars from generations past), but for the first time audiences will see how it all began.
The show’s co-creator and executive producer, Bryan Konietzko, said that he chose Steven for the voice of Wan because of the versatility in his voice.
“Steve’s vocal quality and acting can range from an innocent, naïve young man, to a trickster anti-hero, and all the way to a full-fledged action hero,” Bryan exclusively told Wired. ”And in each take, he made Wan really human and relatable, despite the mythic setting of his tale.”
Steven (or Wan)’s episodes will also depart from the show’s usual anime-inspired artwork to incorporate a look that relates to the story arc.
”To depict the world in Wan’s time, the creative team drew inspiration from ancient and traditional East Asian ink wash paintings and woodblock prints for the environments, color palettes, and stylizations of the elements,” said a Nickelodeon representative. “The results expand the vision of the Avatar world, but also stay very true to the building blocks of its visual influence.”
Avatar: The Legend of Korra is set to premiere September 2013. Will you tune in? Tell us below!
