We shook our fists at the sky and cursed his name, but The Governor survived The Walking Dead Season 3. Not only that, right after the Season 3 finale aired in March, it was revealed that actor David Morrissey would be returning for Season 4 as a series regular. Slap! So The Powers That Be have no problem threatening both Rick and Daryl, but The Governor gets a pass? Child, please.
One guy who never saw The Governor’s survival coming is The Gov’s portrayer himself. "I was surprised but also delighted,” David told Digital Spy of making it to Season 4. He had only signed on for one season. “I love the show, I love being in the U.S., so it's a pretty great ride.” All Walking Dead actors fear for their character’s lives, so it must be a huge relief to read that finale script and see you didn’t actually get killed off. And wanting The Gov to die!die!die! is only to David’s credit. He’s a great actor, creating his own version of a well-known comic book character. It’s a tough position to be in.
So what’s next for this guy that’s so hard to kill? Comic book writer/executive producer Robert Kirkman recently told The Hollywood Reporter we’re going to see The Gov in a new light on Season 4 and “he won't appear until we least expect it.”
But when we do see him, TVLine teased, he’s expected to have a “major presence in at least two Season 4 episodes, both of which are being unofficially billed as ‘standalone Governor’ installments.” Those two episodes are expected to fall in the first half of the season. Remember last year when they did eight episodes, took a painful break of around two months and then returned in February? They’re doing something like that again. (Group groan!)
Michonne will still be obsessed with tracking down The Gov, Kirkman added, which may end up causing her trouble. We’re also supposed to see more things from The Gov’s comic book storyline — which hopefully means less of the new stuff (*cough*Andrea*) they made us watch on Season 3. But it also probably means major problems for Team Prison.
Who knows, maybe we’ll finally see the end of the one-eyed wonder by the Season 4 finale. If and when he does die, he should go out singing, just like this...
