Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland Spoilers: Barbara Hershey’s Return Planned — But What About Sebastian Stan?

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland may be a new realm, but that doesn’t mean old faces won’t be popping up throughout the series; in fact, co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis already have plans for Barbara Hershey to reprise her role as the Queen of Hearts (aka OUAT’s not-so-dearly-departed Cora).

During the show’s summer Television Critics Association press tour presentation (via TVLine), Adam and Eddy revealed that she will hopefully appear in flashbacks, though the same can’t be said for Sebastian Stan’s Mad Hatter. Given that he’s starring in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he’s a little tied up right now. However, the duo maintains that they will never recast him, saying, “We’re never going to have a Mad Hatter not played by Sebastian.”

Phew! Among the other tidbits and spoilers dropped at the panel were mostly about the premiere, which finishes filming in Vancouver this month. In the second half — the first 20 minutes are already set — we will see Alice & Co. back in Wonderland, where we’ll meet Jafar (Lost’s Naveen Andrews) and see more of the Red Queen. This includes their “uneasy alliance” as they both try to keep Alice from reuniting with genie Cyrus!

In addition to reiterating that we will see the Caterpillar in the premiere and learn about the White Rabbit’s backstory throughout the season, the EPs clarified that the location is not supposed to match up with history. “It’s not historical Victorian England; it’s fictional Victorian England,” Adam clarified, which gives them a little more room to play creatively. Notably, Season 1 will also be split into two parts, with the first 13 episodes airing before reality show The Quest debuts on January 2, then come back to finish up their story after. We’re not complaining!

We can’t wait for Wonderland. Are you excited? Share your thoughts below!
