Downton Abbey Season 4 Spoilers: Trouble For Mary and Baby George!

Finally, the stars of Downton Abbey have started spilling the beans about Season 4. Earlier this week, the cast and executive producers got together at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills and couldn’t stop talking about the upcoming series.

Perhaps our most pressing question for the DA crew: What can we expect after the devastating loss of Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens)? Unfortunately, not much in the way of happiness. Although Season 4 begins months after The Accident, the show finds widow Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) still greatly struggling with the loss (us too, Mary).

“#MichelleDockery says Lady Mary has a hard time bonding w/ baby George in season 4 ‘she looks at him and sees Matthew,’” TV Guide Magazine columnist William Keck tweeted yesterday.

We can’t say we’re surprised; Matthew is all we see whenever we look through the latest promo shots...or close our eyes.

In slightly less depressing news, the cast let slip that the next round of Downton gives downtrodden Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) more time in the sun with Laura calling her character “the Carrie Bradshaw of the '20s” and alluding to her blooming romance with her editor. We guess someone in the Crawley household deserves to be happy.

Executive producer Gareth Neame even hinted at seasons beyond number four. “I think the show has got a lot further to go,” he said. “If people around the world love the show, we want to make it.” You’ll be able to judge how you feel about Downton’s brand new season when the show premieres on January 5 in the US, and as early as next month in the UK.
