Travis dumped a lot of info on Hanna — and the audience! — at once, so we thought it was worth going back and breaking down exactly what his story is, so that you can decide if you trust him, and think about what his tale tells us about Wilden's real killer.
The envelope: Travis's first gift to Hanna was an envelope of hundreds with a note saying, "maybe this can help your mother."
What he saw: According to Travis, he was at the lake the night of Wilden's death; his family owns a garage, and Wilden called them to tow his car out of the lake. He explained that he saw Hanna's mom talking to Wilden — and he saw her drive away. (Ashley, on the other hand, did not see him, conveniently enough). He heard gunshots after she drove away. He also saw someone run into the woods, and he thinks it could have been a blonde, and it was definitely a girl.
So, the money: According to Travis, after seeing Wilden's body he panicked and left his truck at the lake (how did he get home? Did he just walk? Are we seriously supposed to believe he just forgot about his truck? Even Hanna found this hard to swallow). Later, the truck showed up at the garage, and the envelope full of cash was on the seat. Travis figures it was a bribe to say quiet.
Why come forward now? Other than the convenient timing of this being the penultimate episode of the season, why did Travis finally come forward and give Hanna the money? According to him, good old fashioned gilt.
What do you think: Is Travis telling the truth, or is there more to the story than he's letting on?
