Let’s be honest, we’re super pumped for the Sept. 24 premiere of ABC’s highly-anticipated new show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The freshman drama is set in the Marvel universe and centers around a unique group of individuals responsible for handling some of our favorite superheroes like Spiderman, Wolverine, and The Avengers.
But how closely will the show — which counts television god Joss Whedon as one of its executive producers — be tied to the Marvel world we already know as opposed to creating new storylines of its own?
We already know that Coulson will be on the show despite dying in The Avengers, and Joss tells the Huffington Post that the AoS team is open to more references to the Marvel world, noting that any character has “ an open invitation to swing by.”
Still, don’t expect the show to consist entirely of stories Marvel fans are already acquainted with. “The goal is to establish something that doesn't depend on that,” Joss clarifies. “We think of the movies as sort of the web series to our show. We are trying to weave between the films and we are trying to play in the same universe. So if something crazy happens in the films, we're hoping to play some of the fallout or maybe tease some of that.”
Co-executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen even says that there’s a possibility of new characters from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to migrate back into the movies.
“If people actually respond to who we're creating, then yes, maybe they'll live on in other areas of the Marvel universe,” she reasons.
Excuse us while we take a moment; our minds were just blown.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres on Sept. 24 on ABC. Are you ready for all of this geeky goodness, or does it sound too good to be true?
