Harry Styles is a lot of things — singer, tattoo-haver, heartthrob — and we can add one more to the One Direction dude’s list: Realist. Why? Because he dated Taylor Swift, knowing her track record for writing songs about exes, and he’s totally cool with the ramifications.
"It would be hypocritical for me to say she couldn't do it because everybody writes songs based on personal experience," Harry told Us when asked if he’s afraid that his ex would write up a storm about their short-lived go-round.
Harry and Taylor were first spotted back in November 2012 on the set of The X Factor, when Taylor was set to perform and Harry stopped by to hang during a rehearsal. And then worst wingman ever XF host Mario Lopez confirmed on his radio show that the two were DEFINITELY seeing one another, telling the world that they were “walking off hand in hand” and “officially hanging out.”
Taylor traveled to England, Harry hung around the States, they kissed at midnight on New Year’s Eve, and sometimes stole children for romantic walks in Central Park. All in all, it was pretty darn cute while it lasted. But when they broke up, it wasn’t quite as winsome, with Taylor possibly mocking Harry in a Grammy’s performance and Harry cutting her out of the 1D movie. (Stars — they’re just like us!)
Dating is hard enough for a high-profile stud like Harry without the fear of what might happen if he dates someone equally famous. Harry explains, "I think relationships are hard enough, so I think you have to completely ignore everything from outside. When you're in the opening stages of a relationship as it is, you're still under the pressure of getting to know everything about a person.
“If you have a lot of people from outside telling you what it is and they don't even know you, telling you what your relationship is, that's weird. So I think you sort of have to block it out and just have the relationship rather than think — we're having this relationship play out on magazine covers."
Though they’re no longer together, Harry doesn’t regret dating the occasionally vengeful pop star. "I can't say I'd have dated someone less famous to avoid it," he concludes — super maturely, we must say.
We’ll see how that works out for him when Taylor’s next album drops...
