Lamar Odom Receiving Treatment But Not in Rehab (UPDATE)
UPDATE: 9/5/2013 6:48 p.m. (PT) The LA Times says that while Lamar is indeed receiving treatment in relation to his recent arrest, it's not at a rehabilitation facility. This latest information comes from "two people close to the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter." Lamar's agent, Jeff Schwartz, did not return the paper's call on Thursday, September 5.
UPDATE: 9/5/2013 1:26 p.m. (PT) People now reports that while Lamar did indeed check into a rehab facility on Wednesday, September 4, he checked himself out the following afternoon in the company of an assistant and was later spotted out and about in L.A. Mystery solved.
Earlier: Where in the world is Lamar Odom? It depends on who you ask. On September 4, People reported that Lamar had checked into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center amid countless reports of illicit drug use and a DUI arrest on August 30. However, TMZ, who first broke the story about Lamar's reported crack cocaine addiction, has contradicted People's story in their latest report. While they have no clue where Lamar is, they assert there's one place he's not: Drug treatment.
If stories about Lamar's drug problem are true and he's not in rehab as People reports, we must say we are worried about Lamar's health and the future of his marriage to Khloe Kardashian, who is said to be at the end of her rope. "As much as I wish I were made of steel... I'm not," Khloe tweeted on September 1. (Whether that was in reference to fighting Lamar's alleged demons or all the bad press he's getting is open to interpretation.)
As more and more reports emerge suggesting that Lamar has a problem — and a serious one at that — we can’t help but speculate on what contributed to his recent struggle. Both his personal and professional lives offer some clues.
First of all, addiction runs in the baller’s family, with his father Joe having battled a heroin addiction for several years. In addition to his family history with substance abuse, Lamar’s life definitely had some major ups and downs. Foremost among them was the 2006 passing of his 6-month-old, Jayden, due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
In addition to mourning his infant son, Lamar also lost a cousin a couple years ago and shortly thereafter was a passenger in an SUV that fatally struck a cyclist. The combination of those two traumatic events led Lamar to take a 10-day personal leave from the Lakers, missing four games in the middle of a season and possibly resulting in his being traded to the Dallas Mavericks. The pressure of playing without a contract as a free agent for the L.A. Clippers has probably not helped, either.
Marriage on the rocks
Regardless of the cause, it sounds like Lamar has a serious problem, which has taken its toll on his marriage with Khloe. While sources close to the Kardashian family say Khloe is committed to helping Lamar get well, TMZ reports that she issued an ultimatum last week: Get help, or get gone.If that’s the case, it sounds like that tough love push was an effective one.
