Once Upon a Time Season 3: 3 Things We Want From Ariel
Everyone's favorite red-haired mermaid will be flipping her fins onto our small screens come fall as part of Once Upon a TimeSeason 3. That's right: It's time to get ready for Ariel, played by Joanna Garcia Swisher, while her Prince Eric will be portrayed by the appropriate handsome Gil McKinney.
So far, we don't know a ton about what role this iconic Disney gal will play on the show, though it sounds like we can expect her in Neverland, not Storybrooke. The producers also assure fans that this beloved character will obviously have a desire to see the world, like her movie counterpart — "but we'll meet her in a surprising way," which is about the least surprising thing they could say. When don't they try to put a twist on the big, iconic characters? It's literally the premise of the show.
Oh, and she'll have a connection to a character we already know, because again, who doesn't?
Anyway, despite the sparse info about this mermaid, we have some thoughts on what we'd like to see from her appearance on the show. Here are three things we want from her.
1. Please don't make her biggest enemy Rumple. So far we haven't heard any casting news about Ariel's classic foe, Ursula, and we're starting to worry the writers are going to combine her with a villain we already know (since rolling many characters into one par for the course on OUAT). Specifically, we're worried that character is going to be Rumplestiltskin.
One of the things we love about Rumple is that he's had his hands in just about every fairytale, pulling string and manipulating situations at will. That said, he's already Rumple, The Beast, a replacement for Cinderella's fairy godmother, and Hook's crocodile. Enough is enough. We'd prefer Ursula be her own character ('cause she's so cool), but if that's not to be, we at least hope she's Regina, or really anyone other than Rumple. Give someone else a chance to screw over the pretty girl!
2. Integrate her into the plot. We know Ariel is around for at least two episodes, which means if she isn't immediately important to the plot, she's going to become a major distraction, especially because she's so beloved. With only 12 episodes airing this fall, we want every second to count. We're excited to meet her, but not if it means missing out on time with the characters we already know and don't see enough of.
3. Don't make her disappear! That said, Ariel is one of the most beloved characters in the Disney canon, and one of the most anticipated new characters for the show. Fans have wanted to meet her since Season 1, and it would be highly disappointing to have her show up and then just disappear, never to be seen of or heard from again a la Cinderella (no, we haven't forgotten her, even if the writers have). Hopefully Ariel will be an awesome addition who sticks around for awhile, at least in a recurring role; if that doesn't pan out, we'd at least like to see her story get a satisfying ending, instead of trailing off into nothingness.
