We’re suckers for Stefan and Damon’s brotherly bond on TVD. It’s tempestuous, important, and oh-so-adorable — and we’re still swooning over the moment in the Season 4 finale when Stefan told Damon, “I’m not happy about Elena, but I’m not not happy for you.” Aw. When it comes down to it, no one knows Stefan like his big brother, which is why we want Damon to be the one who figures out that Silas is impersonating Stefan. We know Damon is busy being in love with Elena, but one of the things we appreciate about this show is the balance it maintains between the romantic subplots and the other relationships. It seems honest to us that Damon would be able to (eventually) pick up on a Stefan impersonator.
After more than a century of unhappiness, we’re looking forward to see how Damon deals with a bit of joy. Damon hasn’t had a period of prolonged happiness since the series began. First, he was a indiscriminate killer, intent on doing anything he must to release Katherine from the tomb she had never actually been trapped in. Then, he was in love with his brother’s girlfriend. Now, he and Elena are finally together and happy. We hope he gets some time to enjoy that before TVD releases their next terrible, delicious plot twist.
A new best friend
We miss Alaric — and so does Damon. Ric was Damon’s one real friend, and — now that he’s dead — Damon doesn’t have anyone to hang out with whom he isn’t dating or related to by blood. It’s important to have a variety of relationships in one’s life, which is why we think Damon needs a new best friend. There don’t seem to be any good candidates, but maybe this Dr. Wes Maxfield has a shot at the best friendship. Caroline and Elena’s biology professor at Whitmore, he is being presented as a possible antagonist, but we’re holding out hope. One of the reasons Alaric and Damon made such a good match was because they were both a little bit more mature than the mostly high school-age main cast, and could bond over their troubled pasts. Perhaps Damon and Wes could share a similar dynamic?
