1. K. Michelle’s a country girl at heart.
Though K. Michelle (aka. Kimberly Pate) is known for her silky R&B sound, this star is a country girl at heart — and we can totally understand. Not only is K. Michelle from Memphis, Tennessee, but she grew up listening to the Dixie Chicks. And get this, our girl K’s dream duet would be with country superstars Rascal Flatts!
2. K. Michelle went to school on a scholarship… for yodeling.
In an interview with The Urban Daily, K. disclosed that she received her scholarship to Florida A&M (FAMU) when the showcased her yodeling talents:
“Yeah, I got a scholarship for yodeling. It’s a HBCU (historically black college and university), so they weren’t used to that. I sang other songs as well, but I yodeled and they gave me a scholarship.” Who knew! K.’s 7-year-old son was born while the singer was still at FAMU, but the musician was able to have her son and still obtain a degree in psychology in four years.
“That’s why when people say they can’t go to college and the can’t finish college, I don’t hear them. I went to class everyday up until I had my baby, and I went back to school a week later. And I graduated on time, in four years,” she told The Urban Daily.
3. K. Michelle got to collaborate with her musical inspiration on more than one occasion.
K. Michelle was signed to Jive back in 2008 and met her icon R. Kelly in the process. The two worked on various songs, including K’s hit “I Just Can’t Do This” and Kellz even had the singer on his 2010 Grammy nominated album Love Letter. R. Kelly and K. Michelle would collaborate again after the singer left Jive for Warner Bros. Records to finally produce her first album, Rebellious Soul.
3. K. Michelle is an advocate against domestic violence
K. Michelle made major headlines when it was revealed on Love & Hip Hop Atlanta Season 2 that she and ex-boyfriend Mickey "Memphitz" Wright were allegedly in an abusive relationship. It was especially shocking seeing as Memphitz is now married to Toya Carter (aka rapper Lil’ Wayne’s ex-wife). In 2012, the singer starred in a PSA against domestic violence where she was made to look like a battered woman.
