Pretty Little Liars Speculation: Is Ezra Part of The N.A.T. Club?
We’re not really sure what’s going on with Ezra Fitz’s (Ian Harding) character on Pretty Little Liars. The show seems to want us to believe that he is Uber “A,” but we’re not sure if we buy it. Having said that, he’s definitely hiding something. Today, we explore another explanation: Ezra is part of the N.A.T. Club.
The N.A.T. Club background
The N.A.T. Club was a secret club started by Jason DiLaurentis, Ian Thomas, and Garrett Reynolds to spy on residents of Rosewood, which seemed to amount mostly to filming girls through windows (real mature, we know). The title of the club stands for the Latin phrase “Nos Animadverto Totus,” which means “We See All.” As two of the three original members are dead (and third one narrowly avoiding fatality in a freak elevator accident), some believe they are systemically being killed off. Other known affiliates of the N.A.T. Club include Melissa Hastings and Jenna Marshall, both of whom were with members of the club the night Ali disappeared. As Shana and Wilden both have/had some sort of alliance with Jenna and Melissa, they are also loosely connected to the club.
Ezra fits the demographic
Though we have never seen or heard of anything other than casual connection between Ezra and any members of the N.A.T. Club, he definitely fits the demographic of the group, which tends to skew slightly older than the Liars and their peers. Could Ezra have met one of the members of the N.A.T. Club at college?
Connection to Cape May
The Liars seem to believe that whoever’s lair they found in the summer finale belonged to “Board Shorts,” the older guy Ali had a fling with on Cape May the summer before she disappeared. They originally suspected that person was Detective Wilden, as they found a picture of Wilden and Ali together that summer, but we’re not so sure. If Ezra was “Board Shorts,” then it follows that he could have gotten to know Jason, Melissa, and Wilden that in Cape May, given that they were all vacationing there that summer. It wouldn’t have been a far jump to have him join the N.A.T. Club.
The way Ezra stormed into the lair in the summer finale definitely implied that it belonged to him, which would mean he knows his way around surveillance. That lair was brimming with photos (and, we’re assuming videos) of the Liars, Red Coat, and anyone else you can think of connected to the “A” plot. Given that surveillance was also the N.A.T. Club’s main hobby when they were in action, it seems like an awfully big coincidence if these two super-spy entities aren’t connecting.
N.A.T. Club agenda
We’re kind of digging the explanation that Ezra is a part of the N.A.T. Club because it is an alternate, gentler narrative to the explanation that he’s “A.” Though the N.A.T. Club has had a bit of an antagonistic past with the Liars, the current members and affiliates don’t seem set on hurting the Liars. Before he died, Garrett gave the Liars information to try to help. Jason has worked with them on multiple occasions and is the half-sibling of Spencer. And Melissa, though super shady, genuinely seems to want to protect her sister. If the N.A.T. Club is somehow trying to watch the Liars’ back, or at least on a concurrent quest to find and take down “A,” we can totally get on board with a storyline involving Ezra as one of their members. It’s a whole lot easier to swallow than the idea that he’s been a) hunting down Ali and b) harassing the Liars as Uber “A.”
