M.I.A.’s Super Bowl Bird Ticks Off Parents Television Council (UPDATE: She Owes $1.5 Million!)
UPDATE: Let's hope rapper M.I.A. has a couple million dollars burning a hole in her pocket.
The "Paper Planes" singer has been embroiled in a heated battle for the past 18 months, ever since she flipped her middle finger at a camera during Madonna's Super Bowl Halftime Show. Now, the NFL is demanding that she pay $1.5 million for breaching her contract and tarnishing the league's reputation, according to THR. Yikes.
Uh, "tarnish" the NFL's reputation? Are we really supposed to believe that pro football players have never used profanity or obscene gestures before? If you say so.
M.I.A. is still trying to avoid paying the hefty sum. "She is going to go public with an explanation of how ridiculous it was for the NFL and its fans to devote such furor to this incident, while ignoring the genocide occurring in her home country and several other countries, topics she frequently speaks to," says M.I.A.'s lawyer.
So M.I.A. might fly like paper and get high like planes, but she probably won't get asked to perform at another sporting event anytime soon.
Original story: Hey, guess what? The notoriously picky Parents Television Council doesn't like it when flippant rappers flip off a camera during the middle of the live Super Bowl Halftime Show. Shocker!
According to TMZ, the watchdog organization has already jumped on NBC for M.I.A.'s momentary indiscretion during the Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show, which they call "the selfish acts of a desperate performer." They claim the network and the NFL are to blame for M.I.A.'s offensive hand gesture, because they knowingly invited "performers who have based their careers on shock profanity and titillation" to the stage.
And don't think a mere apology will satisfy the PTC. No, this time NBC needs to take action to make up for their egregious "slap in the face to families."
"Either the NFL and NBC will take immediate steps to hold those accountable for this offensive material in front of a hundred million Americans," the PTC explains, "or they will feebly sit back and do nothing."
We're not exactly sure what "steps" the PTC wants taken — slapping M.I.A. with a fine? Banning her from future Super Bowls? Public shaming? — and there's been no response from NBC yet.
Of course, we have to wonder: By continuing to rant about it the next day, isn't the PTC helping M.I.A by drawing more publicity to her little stunt? Just a thought...
