Varys the witness. During the trial of Tyrion Lannister for the murder of Joffrey, witness after witness gives testimony detrimental to Tyrion’s case. Then Tyrion sees his old buddy Varys take the stand and breathes a sigh of relief. Surely Varys won’t turn on him, too, right? Right? Wrong. Varys proves to be the most damning witness of all, providing meticulous notes documenting Tyrion’s hatred of Joffrey, all but sealing Tyrion’s fate. Hey, that’s what friends are for, right?
Varys the assistant. After Tyrion is found guilty, Varys receives a visitor in the night. That visitor? Jaime Lannister. Jaime thinks his brother is innocent, and he wants to spring him from jail, but he can’t do it alone. So he forces Varys to help him. We have to say though, Varys doesn’t put up too much of a fight, leaving his intentions, as always, murky.
Varys the guide. Varys and Jaime release Tyrion from prison, and Varys leads Tyrion on his escape through a series of secret tunnels. Ironically, or maybe not so ironically, they happen to pass by a ladder that goes right into Tywin’s chambers. Tyrion says he’d like to pay his father a visit, and Varys half-heartedly tells him that would be a bad idea. Tyrion doesn’t listen, and he murders his father (and Shae, who’s in Tywin’s bed). Varys waits for Tyrion to do his deed, then sends him on his way to Essos, where Illyrio Mopatis (remember him?) is waiting. Varys himself goes into hiding, where he’ll remain for quite some time, until it’s time for the next step in his mysterious plan.
