It was perhaps one of Glee’s most controversial and timely storylines last year and perhaps ever. Months after the Sandy Hook elementary school shootings of December 2012, Glee aired Season 4, Episode 18: "Shooting Star," an emotional episode that dealt with the topic of school shootings.
In a surprising twist, viewers later learned that it was Becky (Lauren Potter), who fired the gun at McKinley High School. The adorable cheerleader has Down syndrome, and she never meant to scare anyone. She carried a gun that day out of a misguided attempt to protect herself from the dangers of the outside world, an increasingly scary and unfamiliar place. When the gun went off at school, Becky didn’t mean for it to fire. It was all an accident.
Knowing all of this, her cheerleading coach Sue (Jane Lynch) valiantly fell on the axe and took the punishment for having a gun at school herself. Sue was then fired from McKinley, and everyone seemed none the wiser about who had actually fired it.
Now, when Glee returns for Season 5 this fall, we will finally get resolution to this story. TV Line has an exclusive clip from September 26’s Season 5 premiere, where Sue herself explains what went down.
According to Sue’s voice-over, a guilt-ridden Becky eventually confessed that she was the one who accidentally fired the gun. As a result, she was required to serve a suspension for one month. Meanwhile, Sue gets her job back and ends up finagling her way into getting Figgins’s principal job.
