Pretty Woman’s Richard Gere Getting Divorced After 11-Year Marriage — Report (UPDATE)

Update (2:48 p.m. ET): A friend of the couple confirmed the split to People, though Richard's rep had no comment for the magazine.

Original story (8:25 a.m. ET):

A certain star is coping with the sad end to a marriage. But that's nothing that a bubble bath and a shopping montage can't fix, right?

Actor Richard Gere and wife Carey Lowell have split up and are getting a divorce, according to Page Six.

The 64-year-old actor and his 52-year-old wife have "been spending time apart for quite some time," says a source.

So what went wrong? One source claims that Richard prefers privacy that's more in keeping with his Buddhist faith, while Carey is a fan of hobnobbing with other famous faces. Carey herself is an actress, having starred on several seasons of Law & Order and played a Bond girl in 1989's Licence to Kill.

“They have a place in Bedford [NY], and he likes it because it’s quiet and he likes the solitude,” says one source. “She likes being in North Haven in the limelight. They live next door to Jimmy Buffett and his family, and they’re good friends.” It is reportedly unclear when exactly they are planning to file for divorce.

The couple have a son, Homer, who was born in 2000. This will be Richard's second failed marriage, following his divorce from model Cindy Crawford in 1995 after four years of marriage. Meanwhile, Carey has been married twice before.

Richard earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role as Edward in Pretty Woman, and another nod for An Officer and a Gentleman. He is also known for roles in Chicago, Unfaithful, and 2012's Arbitrage.

We wish the couple and their son all the best moving forward.
