The Vampire Diaries: Ian Somerhalder on Why Season 5 is Like Season 1
With the Season 5 premiere of The Vampire Diariesjust a week away, The CW is ramping up promotional efforts for one of its flagship shows. Check out this recent interview with star Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) wherein Ian explains why Season 5 is so much like Season 1, and what the Delena relationship might look like moving forward.
“I know this season feels a lot more like the first season of the show,” Ian told CW69. “When I go back and watch the first season of the show, I am transported back to this really phenomenal experience where … we were flying by the seat of our pants every day, every episode, every take, and it yielded a really interesting product.” We remember it well, Ian, and are psyched to hear TVD will be ramping up the frequency crazily unpredictable plot twists (though, we thought they did a pretty good job with those in Seasons 2-4, as well).
Where is Damon at emotionally when Season 5 picks up? Well, we know he is finally with Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), and much of his storyline will focus on that moving forward. But he will still be the same old Damon who Ian describes as a character who “loves with reckless abandon” and “fierce loyalty.” Ian continued: “He’ll screw you over in a heartbeat if he needs to, but it will be for someone he loves.”
What does that mean for Elena? “[His actions] could be deemed as selfish,” Ian said, “but he wants the best for [Elena] and he’s a lot older than her, so he thinks he knows everything … What he needs to do is just let her grow, and make her own decisions, make her own mistakes, make her own triumphs.” We can’t wait to see how (and if) that happens. The course of true love never did run smoothly on this show, right?
