Glee Music: Cory Monteith Tribute — 8 Songs Fans Want to See Included
GleeSeason 5, Episode 3: “The Quarterback” — an emotional tribute to Cory Monteith (Finn), who passed away suddenly this July — is less than a week away. The Cory Montieth tribute airs on October 10, but unlike previous episodes, where song lists are released weeks in advance, information about the music for this episode is being kept under wraps.
The New Directions are rumored to be singing “Seasons of Love” from RENT, and James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain” is also rumored to be in the episode, though we’re not yet sure who’s singing it. Lastly, Rachel (Lea Michele) will perform a song, which some have speculated will be Bob Dylan’s “To Make You Feel My Love.’
Even if this reported song list is true, we figure it still leaves a handful more songs. Glee episodes can have up to eight songs, after all. Earlier this summer, we took a poll of Glee readers, asking which songs you would like to see included in the Cory tribute.
This song comes from Season 3, Episode 10: “Yes/No.” Finn is feeling lost and alone in the world; empty of any purpose or worth. Rachel sings this song to let him know that she can’t imagine her life without him. Later in the episode, he gets down on one knee and asks her to be his wife.
“Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey — 14%
Sung both in the pilot and during Rachel’s Season 4 Broadway audition, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” is forever intertwined in the DNA of Glee itself. It would be a fitting choice for this episode.
“Faithfully” by Journey — 12%
An legendary Finn and Rachel duet from Glee’s Season 1 finale. The first time Finn told Rachel he loved her was right before they went onstage to sing it. To have Rachel sing this song solo would be both poignant and heartbreaking. “I'm forever yours. Faithfully.”
“Can’t Fight This Feeling” by REO Speedwagon — 10%
It’s the song Finn sings in the shower when Mr. Schue (Matthew Morrison) overhears him in the locker room and first begins to understand what amazing potential the football star has as an artist. In the tribute episode, we’d love to see the entire New Directions perform this song in Finn’s honor — with flashback clips of that now-famous shower scene spliced in.
“My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion, sung by Lea Michele — 26%
Perhaps the most famous love song of our time; a heartbreaking tale of love and loss. If Lea sang this song, there wouldn’t be a dry eye in the house.
“Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley — 13%
This sweet, mournful Jeff Buckley tune was a favorite of Glee fans on our Facebook page. “Your faith was strong but you needed proof / You saw her bathing on the roof / Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you.”
“Just a Dream” by Carrie Underwood — 12%
It’s the heartbreaking song about a young girl whose husband-to-be dies right before their wedding day. Considering Finn and Rachel’s romantic history, the words ring particularly true. “Baby why'd you leave me / Why'd you have to go? / I was counting on forever, now I'll never know.”
“You’ll Be In My Heart” by Phil Collins — 11%
There’s something about this Phil Collins classic — and beloved Disney hit — that summarizes all our feelings on Cory’s passing just perfectly.
“'Cause you'll be in my heart / Yes, you'll be in my heart /I'll be there from this day on, now and forever more.”
