The Vampire Diaries: Who’s the Bigger Bad — Silas or Klaus?
There was a time that Klaus (Joseph Morgan) was undoubtedly the biggest bad on The Vampire Diaries— snapping necks, giving impossible ultimatums, and being a general psychopath. Now, he is the protagonist of his very own show, and there is a new handsome villain —Silas (Paul Wesley) — in Mystic Falls to take his place. But the question remains: who is the bigger bad: Klaus or Silas?!
Any villain worth his salt must have witty one-liners to spew at people he is torturing, maiming, killing, etc. Klaus has this down. In Season 2, he told Katherine: “I’ve searched for you for over 500 years. Your death is going to last at least half that long.” Even when he’s hurt (or, maybe, especially when he’s a jerk), he manages to be a jerk: "How could you? You betrayed me and fled England before I could even give you the details. But.. I did find your birthplace and I slaughtered your family. So I guess we’re cool."
As for Silas, so far, he has spent most of his time gathering information. He has shown some promise in the Season 5 trailers, but we’ll have to wait and see if Silas has any witticisms to challenge Klaus’ cleverness. So far, he’s been dry and to-the-point. This is probably a smarter tactic, but it’s not very entertaining.
Enough of this superficial drivel! What can these two Big Bads actually do? Well, Silas is super fast, super strong, can see in total darkness and hear conversations miles away. When he drinks someone’s blood, he gains all of their memories. He is not susceptible to the usual vampire weaknesses (i.e. sunlight, vervain, front doors). And, best of all, he can take on the appearance and voice of anyone he chooses. Basically, he’s invincible. Klaus is pretty impressive and all, but is there really any content here?
Winner: Silas, by a landslide.
We’re not really sure what Silas’ immediate plan is right now (though he seems to want to make people suffer for the way he’s suffered), but ultimately, he wants to find a way to join the love of his life on the other side of the veil. As for Klaus, he is currently in New Orleans, trying to win back the French Quarter and — by extension — protect his unborn child. As far as scheming goes, we have to say Silas’ has potentially much far-reaching consequences. While Klaus’ mayhem seems to be geographically contained right now, who knows how far Silas’ scheming could go in its destruction.
Sure, Klaus and Silas both engage in devious deeds, but what are their motives? Do they have the chance for redemption? Basically, who has the badder heart? At one point, this would have been an even draw, but Klaus has begun to show twinges of humanity in his actions. He’s still a ruthless and impetuous killer, but he has people he loves. He has family. Silas, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have any sensitive side. He hasn’t told any charming stories about hummingbirds. And, as far as we know, he doesn’t care about anyone on this mortal plane. That’s bad.
