The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Spoilers: Paul Wesley on Stefan’s Suffering and Delena’s Reaction!

We can’t wait to see the many side of Paul Wesley this season on The Vampire Diaries. Not only will he be playing Big Bad Silas in Season 5, but he will take on the role of a very damaged Stefan Salvatore, who has spent the summer perpetually drowning at the bottom of a quarry. How will the experience change Stefan? And how will the people he loves react to tortured Stefan? It’s not sounding good.

"Stefan is really screwed up in the head when he gets out of this quarry," Paul told TV Guide in a video interview. “He's the hero and everyone wants to see the hero's journey and his fall and his great redemption, and I think that's what it's all about.”

And when his loved ones find out, it’s not going to be easy, either. According to Paul, “there’s a lot of tension and it’s very awkward” between Stefan and big brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder). Not only is Damon dating Elena, but Damon doesn’t understand this new version of his brother like he did the old one: “I think Damon’s definitely going to be threatened by this new kind of Stefan, who’s had all these torturous experiences and doesn’t react to things the same way.”

As for Elena, Paul said he thinks Stefan will move on — at least, as much as the show allows. “The problem with that is, we’re on this show called The Vampire Diaries that has to maintain a love triangle,” Paul said, “but I think in real life, he probably would be like, ‘I’m out.’”

Nina Dobrev (Elena) told TV Guide that it will be hard for Elena to see Stefan in pain, even though she is with Damon. "When you were in love with someone, even if they're not in your life, you have that connection with them; the love is still there whether it's romantic or not," Nina said. "When she finds out what he's been through it's not easy for her."

Do you think Elena and Stefan stand a chance, or is it Delena forever? Sound off below.

Catch the Season 5 premiere of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
