Government Shutdown Affects Dozens of Couples’ Wedding Plans (VIDEO)
After weeks, or even months, of strategic wedding planning involving screaming at the florist, haggling with the dressmaker, and maybe even disowning a few family members, the last thing a stressed-out bride-to-be needs is a government shutdown. Seriously, Today reports that dozens of husbands- and wives-to-be are currently stranded in a frantic chaos as thenational monuments that were supposed to serve as their big day backdrops are closed down.
“I wasn’t worried about the government shutting down; I was worried about rain,” MaiLien Le told Today. Le and her fiancé Mike Cassesso seem relatively calm on camera, but we figure makeup and some good editing software can do a lot for bloodshot eyes and bursting neck veins.
In all seriousness, the couple is one of about two dozen other pairs who are out one wedding until they can find a suitable replacement for their nuptials. But as Roshel Ryan, co-founder of My Yosemite Wedding, says, trying to find an on-par location when it comes to a national landmark is nearly impossible. “There are lots of gorgeous places around,” Ryan says as she describes working with one couple who is especially irritated that their Yosemite wedding has been barred for this Friday, “but nothing like Yosemite. Yosemite is very iconic. You can’t replicate that.”
It’s unclear whether these couples will receive any or all of their money back when it comes to deposits and even permit fees for holding a wedding at some of these locations.
One couple managed to reschedule their Grand Canyon wedding in time, settling instead for a simple Sedona, Arizona, ceremony, but as Genevieve Jeuck (a frazzled bride-to-be at the time of the interview) said, “I don’t know how much more can happen unless we get a flat tire on the way to the location. At this point, it really doesn’t matter. We’d be happy getting married in a parking lot if we needed to.”
Of course none of us have had to deal with a government shutdown before, but were your wedding day plans foiled at the last minute? How did you deal? Tell us about it below!
