Cory Monteith Tribute: The Band Perry Reacts to Santana’s “If I Die Young”

All of the songs on last night’s Glee Season 5, Episode 3 Cory Monteith tribute were incredibly moving, but one of our favorites of the evening was definitely Santana (Naya Rivera) performing “If I Die Young.” Now, the artist who originally performed the song is sharing her thoughts on its inclusion in the tribute.

Santana expresses her grief in various ways throughout the episode, between making jokes about Finn, shoving Sue (Jane Lynch), and then sharing her true thoughts about Finn with Kurt (Chris Colfer). Finally, her performance of this song was a sign that she is accepting her feelings about Finn’s death.

"I'm so excited that song is being used that way because even though it has 'die' in the title, it was really inspired by and about celebrating life," The Band Perry’s Kimberly Perry says in an interview with

The interview happened before the Cory tribute aired, but Kimberly said she was "really excited that 'If I Die Young' is going to be part of honoring him.”

Indeed, we think this song was a perfect choice, both lyrically and for Santana’s vocal range. Santana previously knocked a country tune out of the park with Taylor Swift’s “Mine,” and “If I Die Young” was no exception. Bravo, Glee.
