People have been saying for ages that Mulan's feelings towards Aurora, AKA Sleeping Beauty, transcend friendship on Once Upon a Time, and tonight's episode, Season 3, Episode 3: "Quite a Common Fairy" seemed to confirm that this reading of their relationship is more than wishful thinking.
Throughout this season, Mulan and Neal have had conversations about how Neal regrets not telling Emma he loved her when he had the chance, and it's been clear that Mulan has been considering confessing her own feelings. Most people assumed she was thinking of Prince Phillip, but the end of Episode 3 put a twist on things.
After Robin Hood offered her a place amongst his Merry Men, Mulan decided that she had to talk to someone first before she could make her decision. She rushed to Phillip and Aurora's castle, and gleefully found Aurora there. She asked if Phillip was home, but instead of getting upset when the answer was no, she was happy, because what she had to say was for Aurora. However, her friend interrupted Mulan with the news that she's pregnant, and, clearly distraught, Mulan said she was joining the Merry Men after all.
To us, this scene clearly read as Mulan preparing to confess her love to Aurora, and then backtracking because she thought there was no way Aurora, now pregnant, would return her feelings. And we gotta say, we love that the show decided to make Mulan's feelings for her friend more than platonic, because that's how their scenes read to us last season anyway.
Do you agree, or did you have a different interpretation of this scene? Are you happy with this plot? Do you think Aurora might return Mulan's feelings? Sound off in the comments below.
