Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey Season 4: Will Mary’s Suitor Lord Gillingham Return?

Everything looked to be going so well for Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and her old childhood friend and new beau, Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen).

Reunited at the party held during the January 12 episode, the two immediately hit it off. Riding around the estate, reminiscing about their comfortable posh upbringings, talking about their respective places in society — Mary and Tony appeared to have all the makings of Downton’s new power couple.

Lord Gillingham saw the potential, too. After enjoying a night out in London with the eldest Crawley daughter during the January 19 episode, he rushed back to Downton and asked Mary the big question: Will you be my wife?

It was romantic. It was passionate. It was really, really fast. In fact, the whole thing was just too fast for the recently widowed Mary who, mind you, only made the decision to not give up on life completely a couple short episodes ago. After receiving Mary’s refusal and getting a helluva goodbye kiss, Tony heads off into the sunset to, we presume, wed the Hon. Mabel Lane Fox and have a sad, loveless life.

But is that really it? Is Tony out of our lives forever? Nope! He'll appear in three more episodes this season: February 9’s, February 16’s, and the Christmas Special airing February 23. We well remember the kind of magic, both good and evil, Julian Fellowes can work during that particular special. Let’s just not try another proposal in the snow, shall we, Jules? Some things are sacred.

As for what brings Tony back to Downton, it’ll be all about Mary. If you want definitive answers to your questions including what happens between Tony and Mary this season, we've got the details. But warning: Spoilers ahead!
