As Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries progresses, the Salvatore brothers are heading into yet another chapter in their fraternal relationship and Silas is on the prowl. What did Ian Somerhalder (Damon) and Paul Wesley (Stefan) have to say about their respective characters? Read on to find out!
Paul told Entertainment Weekly that the biggest differentiating factor in playing Stefan vs. Silas, comes in their respective ages and how that affects their reactions: “It was more about making him 2,000 years old … as opposed to someone 160 years old … and this lost sort of guy who had a tremendous amount of guilt. I don’t think Silas really has the guilt.”
Paul called Silas “a man on a mission,” saying, “he’s so much older and so much wiser, I think he doesn’t react to things as quickly as Stefan does.” If only we knew what that mission was, and how worried we should be about Silas’ reactions…
Ian says that he he is excited for Damon to interact with post-quarry Stefan: “I love this dynamic with Silas, and I love this new dynamic with Stefan once we find him — if we find Stefan,” Ian said with a wink, i.e. we think Stefan’s discovery is a foregone conclusion.
But don’t expect Damon to be completely de-clawed what with his romance with Elena and his relationship with a traumatized baby brother. Ian said that he will “fiercely protect” Damon’s killer instincts “because that’s the character we created, that’s the character that people love ... You can argue, ‘Well people change.’ But, look, this guy’s 170 plus years old. He’s not gonna change in the 2.5 years this show’s been on.” Yikes! Maybe Damon the reformed serial killer isn’t as reformed as we (or Elena) thought.
