When we first heard Sandra Oh (Cristina Yang) would be leaving Grey’s Anatomy for good at the end of season 10, our first thought was, “what will happen to Meredith and Cristina?” We know Mer’s going to hate being without her BFF — and we’re going to hate saying goodbye to the longest relationship the show has ever seen.
But it looks like the Grey’s writers have a plan in mind to make the separation a little easier — and, according to what Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) told The Hollywood Reporter, it may already be the beginning of the end for them.
In this week’s episode (season 10, episode 5: “I Bet It Stung”), we see the first ties between Meredith and Cristina breaking as Cristina gives away Mer’s surgery after she “comes in unprepared.”
“They're putting her on the mommy track," Ellen said. "Meredith doesn't think she's being supported by anybody in this episode, so she's getting angry. This is the beginning of their break-up, where Cristina doesn't believe that Meredith can be the same type of surgeon because she has kids.”
So what will Meredith have to do to keep up? “I'm not sure where the writers are going,” Ellen said, “but I'm hoping they show she's either going to have to step up her game and prove them wrong or go the other way and not be a surgeon and leave the hospital, too."
And in order to make Cristina’s exit easier, she’s got to be the one who’s challenging Mer to be a better surgeon.
“I think the writers want to focus on the separation of Meredith and Cristina right now,” Ellen explained. “The easiest thing for them to do right now is to separate them because they have to separate Cristina from a few people, and I think this seems like the easiest path for them."
Do you think it’s easier for Cristina and Meredith to “break-up” before Cristina hangs up her scrub cap for the last time, or can they stay long distance BFFs? Let us know what you think below!
