The Walking Dead’s Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker) is dead twice over by now — the second time put down by his baby brother Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) in an emotional scene toward the end of Season 3.
But so what? Lori Grimes (Sarah Wayne Callies) and Shane (Jon Bernthal) also died, then returned as Crazy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) hallucinations. Daryl doesn’t seem to be crazy in Season 4, but the show occasionally does flashbacks — and Daryl already had a Merle vision back in Season 2. Can’t he have another Merle vision, or a Merle flashback?
"You know what, I died two times in one episode!” actor Michael Rooker told Digital Spy. “So as far as I know, I am dead ... and there's nothing I can do about it. I don't think they're going to go back and relive that. I think they're busy doing their own thing going forward."
You never know, though. Merle was a huge part of Daryl’s life. Maybe Season 4 doesn’t have time for a Merle vision/flashback, but who knows what the future holds. Merle turned into a popular character, and there’s always room for a prequel following the Dixon brothers (maybe even that homicide cop show MTV wants to do…)
Michael said Merle’s Season 3 return was “really cool” and a long time coming, since we hadn’t seen where he was since Season 1. “In my opinion I think Merle should have returned a whole lot sooner than that! But the payoff was awesome when it did occur."
He said he’ll be watching Season 4 as a fan, like the rest of us. “I'm actually looking forward to seeing what's going to happen. I'm quite into the show and I like it a lot. [...] We worked our butts off on the show so it's kind of fun to sit back and enjoy it without all the blood, sweat, and tears that you put into it while you're doing it."
We miss you, man! Would you like to see Michael return in some fashion, or do you think Merle’s powerful exit from the show should remain his last hurrah? Vote below!
