Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton) and Deacon Claybourne (Charles Esten) made it out of that gnarly season-ending car crash alive, and they will both live on to Nashville’s winter finale — as if we had any doubts! — but one character won’t be quite as lucky.
When a curious fan asked TVLine’s Michael Ausiello for some Deacon and Rayna scoop,he confirmed that neither of them will be killed off by the December mid-season finale, but he also included a decidedly more ominous tidbit.
“Sadly, the same can’t be said for [spoiler],” he concluded.
Um, aca-scuse us? You just drop a bomb like that and move on, Ausiello!
While we’re frustrated by the utter lack of information, let’s take this opportunity to speculate about who might bite the dust just in time for Christmas.
Perhaps the most obvious choice is Rayna’s dad, Lamar Wyatt (Powers Boothe). Pops has fallen victim to heart problems in the past, and Powers was already downgraded from series regular for Season 2, meaning we’ll be seeing a lot less of him anyway. The same can be said for Deacon’s sponsor, Coleman Carlisle (Robert Wisdom).
But if we’re talking about characters we don’t want to see live to the back-half of Season 2, then that honor goes to none other than Peggy Kenter (Kimberly Williams-Paisley). No offense Pegs, but your desperate love-me-because-I’m-fake-pregnant-with-your-baby storyline got old real fast.
Of course, we could also be saying goodbye to one of the many new characters, or even someone we haven’t met yet.
