Danai Gurira on Michonne and Her Past: “If She Was Softer, She Would Be Dead!”

Michonne (Danai Gurira) has gotten some flack for her time on The Walking Dead, with many viewers having a difficult time relating to the oft aloof and tough character. But with Andrea’s death at the end of Season 3, a new Michonne has begun to emerge. Sure, she’s still out for blood, constantly hunting The Governor (David Morrissey) in an effort to get revenge for Andrea’s death, but she’s also formed relationships with many members of Team Prison — including Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) — which is something she wasn’t capable of before.

Danai discussed Michonne’s evolution with Entertainment Weekly Radio, explaining, “In the beginning she was reserved, she was tough, she was impenetrable. But that was intentional. The beauty of episodic television is you can actually start to roll out other aspects and colors and start to get to know her more, and I think that’s really fun to play with.”

In addition to her fondness for the Grimes men, viewers also got a peek at emotional Michonne when she was forced to hold Baby Judith for a brief time. As soon as Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) placed little Judith in her arms, Michonne started sobbing, leading many to believe that she may have been a mother who lost her own child or children in the zombie apocalypse.

“There’s something there that is eliciting those emotions, I can concur with that,” Danai dished when asked about the emotionally charged moment.

And despite her on-screen character’s obvious evolution, Danai still gets offended when viewers bash Michonne for being a little too tough. “If she was softer, she would be dead! It’s an apocalypse, she’s got to have some toughness!” the actress exclaimed.

She may be tough on the outside, but Michonne clearly has other layers that will be further explored this season.

Do you think Michonne is too tough, or do you like her just the way she is? Vote below!
