America’s Biggest Baby of 2013 Is Born — How Much Does He Weigh?!
The average newborn baby weighs anywhere from six to nine pounds, so you can imagine new mom Sara Brandon's shock when she delivered her son, Joel Brandon Jr. (aka J.J.), and he weighed in at a whopping 14 pounds.
J.J. was born at Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem, Utah on May 9, and his mom was surprised to say the least. "My last ultrasound showed that he was going to be around 11 pounds," Sara toldThe Huffington Post. "So when he came out and he was 14, I think everyone in the whole room — even the doctors — was so surprised."
J.J. was born via C-section because of his large size, and his birth was slightly complicated. Sara had two doctors assisting in the delivery, and her little man was born "blue and floppy" with respiratory problems. "They said that they had to use some maneuvering for shoulder dystocia that they normally only use in vaginal births –– in other words, he was so big and crammed in there that they had a hard time getting him out," Sara explains.
Apparently, little (er, big) J.J. is the largest baby to be born in the United States this year, with a girl named Addyson Gale Cessna coming in second at 13 pounds 12 ounces. J.J. is currently healthy and happy at home with his parents and twin sisters, and doctors say he's in the 150th percentile for height and weight in his age group!
"This big bubba melts my heart," Sara says. "I love him more than I ever imagined I could love a sweet baby boy. He is my squishy cuddle bug."
