Damon Salvatore is not the easiest character to play. Sometimes he does terrible things — you know, like murder the entire Whitmore family generation after generation. The point is that Ian is able to give his character many sides and a sense of complexity. For every strength there is a vulnerability. For every quip there is a heartfelt confession. He plays every end of his character spectrum with equal enthusiasm and effectiveness, giving us a Damon Salvatore who is more than the sum of his written parts.
The Vanity Project
He’s got staying power
It’s hard to keep a character interesting after more than four seasons on the air, but we’re just as fascinated by Damon Salvatore as we were in the TVD pilot — and it’s not just his smouldering stare. Sure, some of that has to do with the amazing team of writers who work on TVD, but it also has a lot to do with Ian’s ability to evolve his performance to show how Damon has changed since Season 1.
He uses his celebrity for good causes
Though a majority of the decision on who should win a People’s Choice Award may be decided by an actor’s performance on screen, we also think their celebrity personality plays a factor — and Ian totally uses his celebrity status for good not evil. In fact, Ian landed at No. 8 on the list of 2013’s most charitable celebs. Some of the causes he is passionate about: protecting the environment, animal rights, and preventing suicide amongst LGBT youth. What a guy!
This is Ian’s fourth nomination, and he’s yet to win! We can’t let that kind of losing streak stand for poor Ian’s sake! We think this year could be his lucky year. No letting those Supernatural studs stand in our way. We don’t care how charming those Winchester brothers may be!
He’d look good up on that stage
Sure, maybe we’ll get to see him walk the red carpet. Maybe we’ll even get a split-second reaction shot of him in a sea of celebrity faces. But, if Ian wins the award, then we get to see him in all of his gorgeous glory on the stage in excellent lighting. That’s reason enough for us.
It could be part of a TVD sweep
TVD is also up for “Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show,” Nina is up for “Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Actress,” and Nina and Ian are up for “Favorite TV Couple.” If we play our cards right people, we could turn this into a TVD sweep. With eight nominations, Glee seems to be leading the television pack, but we think TVD has a chance at scoring the most television wins!
