Why Grey’s Anatomy’s Meredith and Derek Will Win the People’s Choice Award For On-Screen Chemistry
Grey’s Anatomy has many accolades under its belt, but one of the most exciting ones should happen for the show this season: the 2014 People’s Choice Award for Favorite On-Screen Chemistry. So, who is up for the award? (Drum roll please…) Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd, of course.
We could go on and on about the reasons they should win, ranging from their Post-It note wedding to their near-death experiences together to their adorable McChildren and more, but at the end of the day, it’s all about a decade together. Yes, a decade.
Though time isn’t the same at Grey Sloan Memorial as it is in real life — there are flashbacks, flash-forwards, and general time gaps — the show is in its tenth season, and if you recall, MerDer has been together since the beginning. Sure, they didn’t make it official in the first episode, but they hooked up then, and their chemistry has been undeniable ever since.
Meredith and Derek are up against an eclectic group of TV couples: Castle’s Castle and Beckett, The Vampire Diaries’ Damon and Elena, Once Upon a Time’s Emma and Captain Hook, and Glee’s Kurt and Blaine.
For perspective, Castle’s Caskett is around MerDer’s ages, but they’re not married, don’t have kids, and just recently got together after five seasons of will-they, won’t-they tension; The Vampire Diaries’ Delena just got together at the tail end of Season 4 (the show is in Season 5 now) after she had to choose between Damon and his brother, Stefan, in an ongoing love triangle; Once Upon a Time’s Captain Swan has only kissed once and she’s torn between her baby daddy Neal and her intense chemistry with Hook; and finally, Glee’s Klaine has broken up and gotten back together on the show, and though they’re engaged now, they’ve only been together for a few years overall — in high school.
While we don’t hate against any other ships sailing around the TV world, let’s be real: Meredith and Derek have the most staying power and 10 years of chemistry under their belts. They’re a shoo-in for the People’s Choice Award, and the millions of Grey’s fans watching every week can attest to that — and vote for them, of course.
The People’s Choice Awards air on January 8, 2014, at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. You canvote at PeoplesChoice.com, their official voting app, and on Facebook or Twitter through December 5, 2013.
