Pretty Little Liars just wrapped the filming for Season 4, and while most fans are trying to figure out if Ezra is really "A," we have another question on our minds: how many more seasons of the teen mystery drama can we expect? PLL showrunner Marlene King says...
“As many as fans will support.”
Huzzah! Going by the stellar ratings during the first half of the season, we think that could be a while. After the Halloween episode drew in record ratings, we're more confident than ever that this show's fans are still as dedicated as they've always been.
We know the show will be around for Season 5, since it's already been renewed. But what about after that? Can it really keep going?
That said, there are definitely some potential obstacles to the show lasting forever, no matter how much the fans love it. For one, the main characters are all seniors in high school at this point, and have been for a while. Many television high school dramas suffer when they try to make the transition to post-graduation life, and the writers have hinted that we'll probably see the Liars don their caps and gowns by the end of Season 5. Will PLL work as well if the writers are forced to come up with contrived reasons for the Liars to stay in Rosewood?
Another possible problem comes with the suspense-driven nature of the show. We love the mysteries at the heart of PLL: What happened to Ali? Who is “A”? Why are these girls being targeted? But there is a delicate balance between keeping viewers in the dark and giving us enough information to keep us interested. So far, PLL has done a very good job at maintaining this balance, but it will only get harder as the show continues. At some point, we want answers!
