Downton Abbey Hits Ratings High With Season 4 Finale

Well, it’s official: Nobody misses Dan Stevens. Or, to be fair, Dan’s character on Downton Abbey, Matthew Crawley.

The blond English cherub — who, for the record, we miss more every single day — left for the bright lights of Hollywood at the end of Season 3, a career choice that resulted in the grisly death of Matthew on the hit show. The sudden end of Downton's leading man had many thinking the series’s days were similarly numbered.

Not quite, according to the latest ratings. The Season 4 finale, which aired in the UK on November 10, pulled in a peak audience of 10.5 million viewers, reports British channel ITV. It was the drama’s biggest audience of the year, drawing in an estimated 40 percent of all Britons watching telly at the time, according to The Telegraph.

The series has had high numbers throughout Season 4 despite the controversy stirred up over storylines including the sexual assault of a key character and the abortion considered by another main star.

That said, the show is slightly down from the average 9.7 million that turned in during Season 3. That includes Season 3’s Christmas Special, which, according to a recent Telegraph poll, was the least popular among Downton fans, receiving only 65 out of a 1,320 collected votes. Hope that’s of some comfort, Danny boy.
