Grey Anatomy’s Callie Torres: The Doc’s 5 Best Traits

On this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy (Season 10, Episode 9: “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word”), everything’s coming up Callie.

Well, not exactly. Callie (Sara Ramirez) finally gets her own episode, and it’s all because of a mega-crisis she’s facing, compliments of a malpractice lawsuit. But we think Callie getting optimal screentime is way overdue, and we felt it was necessary to make a Callie Torres Appreciation Post to show our support for our favorite fictional orthopedic surgeon.

Here are the top five reasons we love Callie Torres:

She dances in her underwear. We first fell in love with Callie when Richard caught her dancing in her underwear (and sunglasses!) when she set up camp in the hospital so she could be close to work. So adorable — and totally relatable. Admit it: we all dance in our underwear, even if we don’t get caught by the guy who signs our checks. And now, after all she’s been through lately, she’s finally dancing in her underwear again, and we couldn’t be happier for her.

She was a secret heiress. One of the biggest secrets Callie’s ever kept from us — and then her husband, George (RIP!) — was the fact that she (well, her family) was totally loaded and never thought it was necessary to actually tell anyone. Which is funny, because if we were rolling in dough, we’d be shouting it from the rooftops… or letting our Chanel bags do the shouting for us. But Callie never let it slip that she was wealthy, and we love her modesty.

She married Arizona, despite what her family thought. Although everyone managed to (somewhat) get over the fact that Callie was marrying a woman, it was very hard for her to not have the support of her parents at first, since she’d always been very close to them. But even though Mama and Papa Torres weren’t exactly on board from the start, Callie stuck to her guns and married the woman she loves. Not everyone would have the guts to do that!

She’s an awesome mom. Although Sofia began life with three parents and now has two (seriously, why do all the men in Callie’s life drop dead?) Callie’s always been the kind of mom who would do anything for her daughter. While Sofia’s entrance into the world was anything but smooth — remember the massive car wreck followed by the musical surgery? Wait, how could we forget? — it’s been awesome seeing Callie put her awesome mothering skills to work.

She can survive anything. Let’s attempt to count the massive catastrophes Callie’s survived: being cheated on twice, a hospital shooting, being involved in a huge car wreck that almost left her and her unborn daughter dead, the death of her ex-husband, helping her wife adapt to life without her leg, the death of her best friend and daughter’s father, horrific superstorm… what hasn’t Callie gone through? But the point is that she got through it all and turned out to be the incredible person she is today — and that’s why we’ve got no doubt that this malpractice suit will be a walk in the park for her. Maybe. Eventually.

Why do you love Callie? Let us know in the comments below.
